چکیده

Inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase (CA) have complex effects on respiration. Many cells and tissues that are involved in the control of breathing contain various isoforms of CA, e.g., red cells, carotid bodies, lung and brain capillary endothelial cells, muscle and neurons closely associated with central chemoreceptors. 1-9 In human and cats, low intravenous doses of acetazolamide have both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on the control of breathing. 10,11

Methazolamide does not impair respiratory work performance in anesthetized rabbits.

In human medicine, the carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor acetazolamide is used to treat irregular breathing disorders. Previously, we demonstrated in the rabbit that this substance stabilized closed-loop gain properties of the respiratory control system, but concomitantly weakened respiratory muscles. Among others, the highly diffusible CA-inhibitor methazolamide differs from acetazolamide in t...

HY POXIA AND I TS INFLUEN CES ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS OF SPONTANEOUSLY BREATHING CATS

Effects of acute systemic hypoxia on the cardiovascular system (CYS) and respiration of spontaneously breathing cats were studied in two conditions. 1): Hypoxic air (6-8% 02 in N2) was given to the animal to induce systemic hypoxia for 20 minutes. Hyperventilation at this condition lowered arterial C02 tension (PaC02 hypocapnia). 2): In the second run, induction of hypocapnia was prevented ...

The carbonic anhydrase inhibitors methazolamide and acetazolamide have different effects on the hypoxic ventilatory response in the anaesthetized cat.

We compared the effects of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitors methazolamide and acetazolamide (3 mg kg(-1), i.v.) on the steady-state hypoxic ventilatory response in 10 anaesthetized cats. In five additional animals, we studied the effect of 3 and 33 mg kg(-1) methazolamide. The steady-state hypoxic ventilatory response was described by the exponential function: *Vi= G exp(-D P(O2)) + A where *V...
